From the Sports Corner
Last Tuesday, 23rd May, 22 students from Years 3 to 6 competed in the Wollongong Diocesan Cross Country Trials at Willandra Course, Tapitallee. St Michael’s students were privileged to run on their home track. All students ran the 2 km course against the best long-distance runners in Wollongong Diocese. Each race pace was extremely fast. I was exhausted just watching the students put in their best efforts!

The support and camaraderie from St Michael’s students was on display with a special mention to Ezekiel Blinksell who went out of his way to comfort a fellow St Michael’s student who was not feeling the best after their tough race.
We had some extremely pleasing results from the carnival;
- Finn Goddard, of Year 3, ran an extremely impressive race and came in first in his age group, the 8/9 boys.
- Ezekiel Blinksell, also in Year 3, finishing third behind Finn.
- Finn, Ezekiel and Deegan Freeman’s placings earnt the boys 3rd place in the 8/9 boys’ team event.
- Ella Walsh, of Year 5, backed up her first place last year to win the 11 year girls’ event.
- Adam Wisnieski and Morten Ellerington, of Year 5, pushed each other throughout the whole race finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
These runners will progress to the next stage of competition, representing the Wollongong Diocese at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre on Tuesday 13June. We wish them the best of luck!
Congratulations also to the following students who represented St Michael’s with fabulous results;
Our School Athletics Carnival is being held in the final week of this term, on Monday 26 June. This year we are running the carnival a little bit differently.
The first few races for each age group in the 100m and 200m will be for those students who wish to compete against other students in a competitive timed race and would like to represent St. Michael’s at the Diocesan South Coast Athletic trials in Wollongong on Tuesday 8 August. Students who do not wish to run in a competitive race will compete against their friends in a non-timed friendly race. The 800m is for competitive runners only. The field events will be conducted at school during Friday sport lessons.
Permission notes for the carnival are on Compass. It is asked that parents/carers provide permissions and select if their child is competing in the competitive or non-competitive races. Entries for the competitive carnival close on Monday 19 June to enable students to be placed into their races prior to the carnival.
Also, on Compass are notes for students who have nominated for the Year 3-6 Netball Gala day and the Year 5 and 6 AFL Paul Kelly Cup Team. We ask for parents/carers to please complete these and make payments as soon as possible. This greatly assists the teachers who are organising these events.
Upcoming Events;
Friday 16 June – Paul Kelly Cup (Selected Year 5 and 6 students)
Tuesday 20 June – South Coast Netball Gala Day (Selected students)
Monday 26 June – Whole School Athletics Carnival
