Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Tomorrow we commence the annual two weeks July student vacation. I am sure families and staff will appreciate the opportunity to take a well-deserved holiday break. Many families and staff will choose to remain close to home and just relax! I would like to wish all members of our school community a safe and enjoyable time. All Australians have had a challenging first six months of the year and have shown great courage and good will. I would like to sincerely thank our exceptional staff for the teaching and pastoral care they have given to the students, families and each other.
The interim student reports have been well received and the Parent/Teacher interviews have continued during the week. Some interviews will continue into Week 1 of Term 3. If you did miss the opportunity for an interview, please contact the school office and an interview time will be arranged by your child’s teacher.
Today the students in Year 6 have been participating in a leadership day. Due to COVID19, many leadership opportunities for our Year 6 students were put on hold due to the need for social distancing. Our Year 6 students still have 6 months left to further develop their leadership skills. The day was run by Mr Pat Douglas, Mr Cain Holgate and the Year 6 staff. Mr Holgate is a teacher at St Joseph’s Albion Park and has worked with Mr Douglas in this area in the past. Thank you to our teachers for giving these students this opportunity.
Tomorrow we traditionally celebrate NAIDOC Week. While the official day has been postponed until later in the year, we are still observing its significance. The NAIDOC 2020 theme - Always Was, Always Will Be - recognises and celebrates that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the ancient history of this country – a history which dates back thousands of generations. As per the letter to parents on Tuesday, students have been involved in preparing for the day and are invited to wear any combination of RED, BLACK and YELLOW tops for the last day of Term 2. The sports uniform is red, so it would be appropriate to wear it as parents are not expected to purchase anything to wear on Friday. The rest of the sports uniform will be worn with predominantly white runners as well.
The parish carpark opposite the church appears to be having a few issues again. I have republished the information shared with you earlier in the year. Our main priority with the carpark is not the quick drop off or pickup of students. The priority is the SAFETY of the students. Please follow the directions I have shared with you and continue to show the patience and good behaviour that keeps our students safe. Some staff and I will occasionally visit the carpark from the start of next term to provide support and direction where required.
St Michael's Staff K-6 will be involved in a professional learning day using the NSW Mathematics Syllabus to plan a developmental scope and sequence of learning for the whole school. This will be held on Monday 24th August (Week 6) and will be a PUPIL FREE DAY. Please put this date in your calendars.
This day will be supported by Anita Chin who is a leading expert in Australian primary mathematics education. Anita works with many schools across Australia to support teachers. This day is a wonderful opportunity for the staff of St.Michael’s to work with Anita in planning new learning and whole-school understanding of the mathematics curriculum.
School will resume for Term 3 on Monday 20th July 2020. We look forward to all students returning to school refreshed and ready to learn. Enjoy the break.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton
