Sports Corner

After last year's lull in sports due to COVID, it is great to see so many students from St Michael’s representing the school in a variety of sports.

On the 5th March, 50 students represented St. Michael’s School in the Paul Kelly Cup at Nowra Showground. The students played in a round robin event against teams from other local surrounding schools. Playing the game proved a challenge at first for some of the students as this was their first time playing AFL and they had to get used to the 360° of play, tackling and the rules. The students soon adapted and played hard and fair. The students got into the spirit of the day and had a great time learning new skills and an appreciation for the game. All teams played extremely well and a number of teams progressed through to the next stage of the competition. The girl's team was successful in progressing through to the next round to be played in Moruya on the 21st of May. Well done to all students for their participation and good luck to the Year 5 and 6 students representing St Michael’s School in the next round.

We also had a number of students trialling for selection for a Diocesan team in Soccer, Netball, Rugby League and Hockey. In these trials the students competed against up to 60 other talented players from schools across the diocese in their chosen sport. The talent was exceptional and competition was extremely high in trying to make it onto the Wollongong Diocesan team. Congratulations to Brodee Green, Noah Jamieson, Taj Goddard and Luke Keating in making the Wollongong League Team, Anna Duncan for making the Netball team and Zahli Schellnegger for making the Soccer team. We wish these students the best of luck in their representative duties and look forward to hearing how the next level of competition goes.

On the 8th of March, Nash Norton participated in the Diocesan Swimming Trials, looking to make it on the Wollongong Swim team. Nash competed in the 50m Butterfly and Breaststroke. Swimming against other talented and competitive swimmers Nash did the school and himself proud, only just missing out of the top three in both events. Well done to Nash for his fine efforts.

Yesterday, students from Years 3 and 4, participated in the AFL Gala Day. Like the Paul Kelly Cup, the students participated in a round robin of games against other local schools. For many students this was their first time playing such an exciting and dynamic game. The students had an absolute blast and it was great that the weather held off, for the most part, so they could all participate. From all reports from the teachers, the students were well behaved and showed great sportsmanship.

Unfortunately, the Cross Country planned for tomorrow has had to be postponed. With the forecast of rain and previous rain, we had to make the regrettable decision of postponing the event. Due to the high demand for the Willandra course, we will be unable to reschedule the Cross Country there. More than likely it will be held at the park next to the hospital in the foreseeable future. Alerts will be sent out through compass to confirm the day it will be held.

Attention all Year 5 and 6 Rugby League and Union players. On the 3rd May, there is a knockout Rugby Union Tournament in Woonona. St. Michael’s School is looking to put a team together. If you are interested, please see Mr Allmark regarding more details.
