Dear Parents,
During the last week we have had a number of important events at school. The Year 5 leadership camp concluded on Friday afternoon. The students were outstanding at the camp, demonstrated through their participation and reflections. Thank you to our Year 5 teachers and all staff who assisted with this school first!!
On Friday our Year 4 and 6 students attended the parish ‘All Saints Day’ mass. The reverence displayed by the students was exceptional. On Sunday a number of Kindergarten families attended the 9.30am mass. The students were actively involved in the mass and the teachers were very proud of them. In 2020, we will be exploring additional ways to involve St Michael’s families in mass opportunities, both on Sundays and important times such as ‘Mission’ time.
Our last ‘Transition to School Through Playgroup’ occurred on Tuesday this week. The formal ‘Orientation to Kindergarten’ for students will occur next week on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:15am to 10:30am. Parents have received information about these days.
On Monday 11 November 2019 at 10.45am, the school will have a short ‘Remembrance Day’ ceremony at the front flagpole area. This is such an important day in world history and is commemorated at 11am all around the world. Thank you to the students and Mrs Wenban who have prepared this important liturgy. All are welcome to join us.
On an extremely important note is the SCHOOL FAIR which begins this Sunday 10th November 2019 from 10.30am. This is such an important day for our school and is the major fundraiser for the year. I am hoping EVERY FAMILY will be able to attend, for at least an hour or hopefully longer. Many families have already donated to the various stalls and there will be lots to do on the back playground. All of the usual great stalls will be available, including food! PLEASE MAKE THIS A PRIORITY for Sunday. We may still require assistance from families for some of the stalls so any assistance will be appreciated. A big thank you is extended to our School Fair convenor Lucy Duncan and her extraordinary team. The best way you can help is by attending on Sunday. Please do your best to be there. The excitement build up towards the School Fair commenced this morning with the arrival of the POWER FM radio team. They actively promoted our School Fair and provided a fun experience for the students. Thank you to POWER FM for supporting us.
See you at the School Fair.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton
It’s been much quieter this week on the sporting front but that’s not to say that nothing has happened! Yesterday we had two students from Year 6 represent St. Michael’s at the PSSA athletics carnival in Homebush. Our two athletes were Thomas Duncan who competed in the Senior Boys 1500m run and Brooke Pearson who competed in the 13 years girls 100m run. To make it this far the students had to beat the best of the field at school and Diocesan level which is no mean feat!
Thomas was up against some of the best long distance runners in the state from his age. The competition was so good that he ran a personal best of 4:58:79, shaving 1 second off his previous PB. Thomas finished his heat in 8th position and overall he came a very respectable 14th from a field of 38. Congratulations to Thomas for his tremendous efforts!
Brooke was racing against some of the fastest 13 year olds in the state. Her race was a nervous one as there was a false start from another competitor. When restarting the race Brooke was slow off the blocks as she made sure that she didn’t false start herself. The slow start did not put her off her race and she finished strong. So good was Brooke’s run that she placed 3rd overall. The margin between her and 2nd place was extremely close. Brooke is again at Homebush competing in the semi-finals. We wish her the best of luck and congratulate her on her outstanding achievements.
The St. Michael’s Twilight Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday the 27th November at Nowra Pool. Notes have already gone home to students in Years 2 to 5. All notes should have been returned by now. Tomorrow will be the final cut off as it is a big process to input all the students participating in their events. Please note that in order to participate in the carnival students must be able to swim 50 metres easily and unaided, and make a commitment to representing St. Michael’s at the Diocesan level next year.
I will be coming around to see students in Years 4 and 5 to see if any students are eligible to trial for a Wollongong Diocesan team for 2020 for the following sports: AFL, rugby league, touch football, netball, hockey, football and rugby union. Students are required to be experienced players and extremely talented at their chosen sport. If they are successful during these trials, they will go on to represent the Diocese of Wollongong at MacKillop Level Trials and might advance to represent at a State Level if they are successful. Nomination forms will be going to students who meet the criteria for their chosen sport and will need to be returned to me. Students who have nominated for a sport will be informed if they have been successful or unsuccessful to attend the trials when the trial date is near. If you have any questions, please see me.

Mr. Allmark

2019 School Fair
Can you believe it! Our School Fair IS THIS SUNDAY!!!! With just three sleeps to go, we need your help!
If you’re available on Saturday from 10am, we would love for you to join us in the setup required ready for Sunday. It’ll be all hands-on deck erecting marquees and setting up the various fair stations.
On Sunday, we still need volunteers to help out, just for an hour or so at many of the stalls. If you’re able to help prior to the fair, we’re asking for helpers from 8am. Just to recap, the fair is this Sunday, the 10th of November, 10:30am-2:30pm. Tell your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. Please help us spread the word by sharing our social media posts and sharing our Monster Raffle!
You can purchase your Monster Raffle tickets either by filling out the form that went home last week, purchasing one from the P&F table that has been set up before & after school, or online at the following link https://www.trybooking.com/BFUMO
If you have any unwanted plants, succulents, pots or books, please bring them in, either to the office or leave with the P&F table before or after school.
Now is also the perfect time to start baking some yummy treats to sell at our wonderful bake stall! Please bring baked goodies into school Friday, Saturday from 10am-12pm, or Sunday from 8am.
Every school day from now, until the Fair, the P&F will have a table set up before and after school, where you can ask questions, drop off your donations, and basket stall items. Hand in your helper notes to your classroom teacher.
Please remember to send a hamper item in to school, the grade hampers are located in each “R” classroom. The themes this year are:
Kinder: Christmas
Year 1: Pamper (soaps, bath bombs, please no makeup)
Year 2: Craft
Year 3: Games
Year 4: Outdoor (BBQ, garden & outdoor games)
Year 5: Toys/games
Year 6: Gourmet Food Items (please check items are in date)
Please keep the basket stall items coming in, we’ve uploaded a few examples on our P&F Facebook page if you’re stuck for ideas. Thank you so much to everyone that has brought one in so far, they are fantastic!

Please Join us for Remembrance Day
Monday 11th November 2019
The 11th of November marks the anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-1918). Each year on this day Australians observe one minute's silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
St Michael's Ceremony will begin at 10:45am.
Kind Regards,
Renee Wenban
There were 43 Level 5 children competing from Shellharbour, Wollongong, Campbelltown and multiple Sydney gymnastics centres in the recent gymnastics competition held at Shellharbour.
