Dear Parents,
Last Friday night I attended the Catholic Development Fund (CDF) Sports Awards for students in the Diocese of Wollongong. This is always a great night celebrating participation in sport by our students. Four of our students received awards for sporting accomplishments during the year. Congratulations again to Aysha Sanchez, Jalen Rees and Jett Goddard who received the Sports Council Medallion, and to Thomas Duncan who received the Red Sports Council Award for their Diocesan sporting accomplishments. To have four students recognised at this awards ceremony is quite an achievement. Congratulations to these students and their families.
On Monday, many of our Year 6 students attended the St John’s ‘Orientation Day’. The students described the day as informative and useful! It is hard to believe that in four weeks this Year 6 cohort will leave us to head to high school. These students arrived in Kindergarten the same year I commenced at the school and it is always a privilege to see your first Kindergarten students graduate to high school. Please keep these students in your thoughts and prayers over the next four weeks.
Our next orientation day for Kindergarten 2020 will be on Thursday 28 November 2019 from 9:15am to 10:30am. Our first orientation day last week was very successful, assisted I believe by the 8 sessions of ‘Transition to School Through Playgroup’ that a number of the children attended in the first four weeks of Term 4.
This weekend is an important one for the students in our parish who will make their First Holy Communion. Our Year 3 teachers, Mrs Hamilton, Mrs Callaghan, Miss Karas, Mrs Lenihan, our Religious Education Co-ordinator Mrs Mathieson, Mrs Royston, Mrs Fairs, Father Pat, Father Leo and staff have all combined to make this a meaningful experience for the students in our parish. The two masses on Sunday are at 9.30am and 12 noon. The Sacrament of the Eucharist is the third sacrament that most Catholics receive. The origin of this sacrament is the ‘Last Supper’ when Jesus said the first mass and turned bread and wine into his own Body and Blood. Thank you to all staff, parishioners, Father Pat, Father Leo, choirs, musicians and students who will assist at the masses.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton
It is always great to see students do well on the sporting field. Here at St. Michael’s we have had students who have excelled in their chosen sport.
Last Friday night, four students from St. Michael’s received a Diocesan Catholic Develop Fund (CDF) Sport Award. These awards acknowledge the outstanding achievements students have had in their sporting accomplishments.
Aysha Sanchez received a Sports Council Medallion for her efforts in AFL and Soccer where she was selected to the Wollongong Diocesan team for both sports.
Jalen Rees received a Sports Council Medallion for his efforts in Basketball and Touch Football where he was selected to the Wollongong Diocesan team for both sports.
Jett Goddard received a Sports Council Medallion for his efforts in Athletics and Cross Country where he was selected to the Wollongong Diocesan and MacKillop teams for both sports.
Thomas Duncan received a Sports Council Red Award for his efforts in Athletics, Cricket and Rugby where he was selected to the Wollongong Diocesan team for these sports and made the MacKillop team for Athletics and Cricket.
This week a number of students trialed for the Wollongong Diocesan team for 2020 in Basketball, Cricket and Tennis. A lot of students from schools in the Diocese trialed for these sports. The calibre of skills displayed by all the students was high.
Taya Sanchez, trialed for the Tennis team and was successful in making the Diocesan team in 2020.
Xavier Smith and Beau Lynch trialed for the boys Cricket team. Unfortunately, both boys missed out on making this team.
Zachary Field, Nate Rees, Harry Frew, Indiana Hayburn, Josie Schaefer, Katie Seller and Anna Duncan all trialed for the Basketball team. Josie Schaefer and Indiana Hayburn were successful in making the girls team and Harry Frew was successful in making boys team.
Indiana Hayburn has also been participating in the Illawarra Basketball Academy. She has recently been selected to play for the Illawarra Representative Under 14 team. Congratulations to Indiana for her selection in this team
The St. Michael’s Twilight Swimming Carnival will be held next Wednesday the 27th November at Nowra Pool. The entries into the carnival are finalised and students have been placed into their events. Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to assist at the carnival.
I have met with students in Years 4 and 5 to see if there are any students eligible to trial for a Wollongong Diocesan team for 2020 for the following sports AFL, rugby league, touch football, netball, hockey, football and rugby union. Notes went to students who met the criteria of being an experienced and talented representative player at their chosen sport. If they are successful during these trials, they will go on to represent the Diocese of Wollongong at MacKillop Level Trials and might advance to represent at a State Level if they are successful. Nomination forms will be going to students who meet the criteria for their chosen sport and will need to be returned to me. Students who have nominated for a sport will be informed if they have been successful to represent St. Michael’s at the trials in 2020. If you have any questions, please see me.
Regards,
Mr. Allmark
Sports Co-OrdinatorThe library will be closed for borrowing from 28 November onwards. All books are due back 30th November.
