Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the second term for 2021. The students have settled back quickly into their class routines and a great term of learning is ahead of us. Please note the following information:
- Newsletters will continue to be sent home to parents each fortnight from today and will arrive to you by Compass in Week 3, 5, 7 and 9.
- This term Student Progress Reports will be sent home via Compass at the end of Week 9.
- The fortnightly assemblies will occur each Friday in Week 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.
- At this stage assemblies are for students only, but this may change to allow parents if approved by CEDoW.
- Covid19 measures for entering the school playground before and after school will continue and anyone wishing to enter school grounds will be required to apply hand sanitiser.
Over the next two weeks the students will transition from summer to winter school uniform. While the weather is still quite warm, the summer uniform can be worn. We ask for all students to be in full winter uniform including wearing the tie by Monday 3rd May.
Next Monday 26 April 2021, the school will have an ANZAC assembly on the front playground. This will commence at 9.15am. Families of Defence personnel have been contacted and invited to wear their Defence uniform to the assembly which will occur near the flag poles. Our new Defence School Mentor, Natalie Hayes has prepared all aspects of the assembly and it will be a meaningful experience for the students, staff and families attending. If you wish to attend the assembly, please contact the office and register your name. Unfortunately due to Covid19 measures, a morning tea will not be provided after the assembly.
This Friday the infants classes will have their ‘Mini Cross Country’ on the back playground. Due to COVID-19 reasons, parents/carers are not able to attend. The emphasis in this activity is on participation and fun. The event is very low key!
Prayers for our staff member Mrs Bern Royston and her family:
On Monday morning I shared with staff at school the sad news that Mrs Royston's husband Ernie Royston had passed away earlier that morning. Ernie had been unwell for a period of time and a decision was made for him to be cared for in his home rather than hospital. Mrs Royston, her two sons Adam and Luke, and the extended family ensured that Ernie's last months were peaceful and calm, surrounded by much love and support. To Mrs Royston and her family, I extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences, knowing that Ernie loved the support of his close family. I ask you to keep the Royston family in your prayers.
During the recent school holidays, a number of families participated in the ‘Holy Week’ activities leading to Easter Sunday. I hope it was a meaningful time for our families. Following Jesus rising from the dead on Easter Sunday, we now count down the 40 days until he leaves the Apostles and ascends to Heaven to prepare the way for all of us. Ten days later we celebrate the Holy Spirit descending upon the Apostles, marking the beginning of our current Catholic church. Our Year 6 students are currently preparing to receive the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. The next evening for Confirmation candidates and parents/carers is this coming Wednesday at 6:30pm. It is necessary to attend the meeting in order to fully prepare for this sacrament.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton
Next Tuesday, St Michael’s will have 32 students representing the school in the Diocesan Cross Country at Willandra. They will compete against other schools in the diocese and for a spot on the Wollongong Cross Country team. The first 8 finishers for each age group will be selected to represent Wollongong at NSWCPS Cross Country to be held at Eastern Creek on Tuesday 8th June. We wish all competitors running next Tuesday the best of luck.
The P&F are looking for parents to help out next Tuesday at the Diocesan Cross Country. St Michael’s is the host school and the P&F run a canteen up at Willandra. The money raised here is used to help buy resources for the school. If you are able to help for an hour or two, please contact Mr Allmark at allmarka01@dow.catholic.edu.au or Sophie Pavlis on 0439018374
Tomorrow, Zahli Schellnegger from Year 6 will take part in the NSW MacKillop trials, representing the Wollongong Diocese in soccer. We wish Zahli the best of luck and look forward to hearing about the day.

Seasons for Growth
In term 1 I began Seasons for Growth with Years 5 and 6. Between the two grades I am running 6 groups. These take place on Thursday and Friday. We are halfway through the program. Midway through the term I will start running the Seasons program for Year 4 and later for Year 3.
Art Club
Last term the school was granted some extra money for wellbeing in the school. After consultation with Mr Paton, I have established an Art Club which is taking place once a week at lunchtime. Whilst Art Club is for everyone, it is targeted to those students who need extra support in their wellbeing. It might mean they need an alternate activity to the playground or they are new to the school and it is an opportunity for them to develop some friendships.
At the end of term 1 I completed some Easter Craft activities with students. Check out the pictures of their creations.
Dear Families of St Michael’s,
Many of us understand what a terrible disease cancer is and the burden it places on families. Unfortunately, so many of us are already connected to someone who has had to fight such an unimaginable fight. Similarly, we know too well the financial burden this places on a family with treatment, travel and accommodation to consider. It is because of this prevalence and impact on our own school community that I signed myself up to dance it out at the Stars of Nowra Dance for Cancer. This is because a little humiliation on my part helps reduce the affliction placed on these families. All funds raised for this event go directly to our local community and community members that are assisted by the Cancer Council. Part of my involvement in Stars is to create a goal and raise funds for this worthy cause. I would welcome any financial support that can be spared to help shape a better future and to provide the hope these heroes so desperately need. If you are keen to help out, you can donate below:

If you are keen on coming along to the event, please see the below details:
Date: Saturday 29th May

Mother's Day Classic - Huskisson
The Mother's Day Classic is held annually all over Australia both in Capital Cities and regional areas. This is the 5th year holding the Huskisson event which has raised over $40,000 through sponsorship, registrations, raffles and Bunnings sausage sizzles. We would not have been able to achieve this without the help of our local community.
In 2021, you can participate virtually at a time to suit yourself or you can participate on the day between 9am and 11am within allocated time slots. Registrations and more information can be located on the website. https://www.mothersdayclassic.com.au/local or following the link on our Facebook page Mother's Day Classic Huskisson.
Thank you.
