Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I have returned to school this week, following the Religious Congress in Anaheim, California. Mrs Martine Mathieson and I felt very privileged to be selected to attend the Congress. The opportunity to actively participate in an international Congress, surrounded by other Catholic educators and parishioners was a wonderful opportunity. The theme of the Congress was ‘Embrace Grace’ and the quality of speakers was outstanding. A number of Bishops, Priests, Brothers and lay women and men led sessions at the Congress. Mrs Mathieson and I also had a day in an outstanding Catholic School and visited an outreach centre called ‘Homeboy’ which was founded by a priest to assist ex-gang members to reclaim their lives. The Principals and Religious Education Coordinators of the other four schools that attended the Congress were also deeply impacted by the experience as well. A special thank you is extended to Mrs Rutkowski, Acting Principal, the school leadership team and all staff who ensured all went well during our absence.
During our time away, there have been numerous big events such as:
- The Power FM radio show which was beamed live from our back playground and featured guest appearances from Mrs Rutkowski and our student leaders
- Open days for prospective students in 2024. Both sessions were well attended and supported by staff and student leaders
- The Cross Country carnival for students in Years 3-6. An excellent day organised by Mr Allmark, staff and parents
- Representative sport trials attended by St Michael’s students
The representative sport trials have continued since our return. Mr Allmark will give an update in his sport report. Good luck to all students who are continuing to attend these sport trials. A number of our students have made it through to the next level. The students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will participate in a ‘mini’ Cross Country carnival on our back grassed playground next Friday 24 March 2023. Further details will be shared and parents/care-givers are welcome to attend.
This week the students in Year 3 and 5 commenced NAPLAN. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is the only nation-wide assessment of students’ literacy and numeracy skills. It provides parents important insights into their child’s progress at school, and helps governments, education authorities and schools to see whether young Australians are reaching important literacy and numeracy goals. This is the first year NAPLAN will be held in March, having traditionally been held in May. The main reason for having the tests conducted in March is the belief that valuable data will be available earlier to inform teaching and learning programs, and to identify professional development needs. It also means parents will receive results earlier in the year, helping to inform the conversations they have with teachers. Thank you to the teaching staff who are supporting the students through this testing program. Two days have been completed and NAPLAN will conclude after this Monday and Tuesday. Well done to our students so far.
The new Parents and Friends (P&F) Committee had their first full meeting last Monday evening. The meeting was held in the school library and a number of families were able to attend via Zoom as well. President Carina Beattie and her new team participated keenly in the meeting and a number of new ideas were presented and accepted for the year. The first Parents and Friends event will be a ‘Welcome’ School disco on the back playground in two weeks time - Friday 31 March. All families are invited to attend. Details will be shared with parents. Please put this date on your calendar.
There will also be a ‘Working Bee’ on Sunday 30 April to reorganise the P&F equipment currently under the parish office. Congratulations to this new P&F committee.
On Wednesday I sent home a communication that Father Joseph, our Parish Priest, and I prepared for families of Catholic students preparing to receive the Sacraments of Penance (Reconciliation), Eucharist (First Holy Communion) and Confirmation in 2023 and future years. Through this communication, we explained why the teaching of the Sacraments has moved from mainly school-based, to Parish-based. A decision was taken at the end of last year by Father Joseph and his parish sacramental team to implement this new program for 2023 and beyond. At masses in the local Parish churches over the next two weekends, families of Catholic Year 6 students will need to attend to enrol in the Confirmation program. All students in sacramental years (Year 3 and Year 6) will continue to learn about the sacraments during religion lessons in the classroom, but the Parish-based program will allow families to work through a workbook with their children at home as well. OPEN NIGHT 2023
I wish to thank our wonderful staff and Year 6 leaders who were tremendous tour guides for our Open Night on Thursday 9 March. Several guests made comments acknowledging the maturity and friendly nature of our leaders and appreciate the warm reception received. Well done Year 6!
EARLY LEAVERS- MAJOR DISRUPTION
In recent weeks, the school office has been inundated with parents collecting students before 3pm. The formal school day concludes at 3pm and parents are requested to make medical or other appointments after this time. Collecting students early disrupts teachers and student learning. It also prevents our office staff from finishing their work at an appropriate time each day. From today, students will not be permitted to be collected early without a legitimate reason. For example, when assembly finishes in the hall on a Friday afternoon, parents will not be permitted to collect their children early, as has become the case in recent weeks. We also ask you to contact the school office before 2:15pm if a specific change of plans needs to be conveyed to students, for example, a student needs to catch the bus instead of being picked up. Phone calls to the office with last minute instructions after 2:15pm puts enormous stress on the office staff and teachers to ensure the student receives the updated change of plans. Thank you for your assistance with this.
Finally, thank you to all staff, families and students for participating in the St Patrick’s Mufti Day. All students learnt more about St Patrick during their religion lesson today. St. Patrick's Day is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland. St Patrick was responsible for spreading Christianity throughout Ireland in the 4th century. The day was originally celebrated with religious feasts and services, but gained momentum as a secular celebration of Irish culture when it reached the United States alongside Irish immigrants. Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has coloured its river green to mark the holiday. Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green” - sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock, the Irish national plant. Our Irish heritage in Australia has always been recognised through St Patrick’s day and is one of great celebrations. Enjoy!
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton
Principal

ST PATRICK'S DAY
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for supporting our Wear Green for St Patrick’s Day.
We raised $600 for Caritas Australia. The money raised this Lent helps transform the lives of people living in poverty.
Together, we can make a difference now, and FOR ALL FUTURE GENERATIONS.
LA CONGRESS
Mr Paton and I had a truly uplifting trip to Los Angeles where we attended the Religious Education Congress, visited a K-12 Catholic School, cathedrals, and Homeboy Industries.
The theme for the Congress was ‘Embrace Grace’. The grace we receive in Baptism is the gift of the Holy Spirit. We have the power to walk in Jesus’ footsteps, bear witness to his love in our lives, and serve him in the mission of building his kingdom.
The liturgies and masses were brought to life through music, liturgical movement, processions and most importantly inclusiveness. It was wonderful to see Americans celebrating their faith.
Inclusiveness is an important area that Mr Paton and I are keen to develop further here at St Michael’s. More information will be shared in the coming weeks.
Homeboy Industries is the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry program in the world. For over 30 years, they have been a beacon of hope in Los Angeles to provide training and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated people, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of their community. We had lunch at their Homegirl Café, Ooe of the training programs, provided to assist people in building a better life. The founder of Homeboy Industries, Fr Gregory Boyle, S.J. overwhelmingly demonstrates the power of boundless compassion.
We can all try to follow one of his empowering quotes…
“Sooner or later, we all discover that kindness is the only strength there is.”

ALERT NOTICE - HEAD LICE
Alert Notice - Head Lice
Don't Panic. This is not a major drama.
Get mum or dad to check your hair. Look around the ears, back of the neck and under your fringe. Everyone in the family needs to be checked.
Head lice have been detected in the school amongst our primary classes. It is extremely important for you to check your child's head for head lice today. If you do find head lice, commence effective treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading. Head lice can make you feel uncomfortable but they won't hurt your health.
Don't forget to wash linen and hats! Thank you.
In the sporting world of St. Michael’s, the past fortnight has been extremely busy. Last Friday, 10th of March, students in Grades 3 – 6 competed in the annual school Cross Country at Willandra. This was the first time we have held this carnival at Willandra in over 3 years. We were blessed with perfect weather for the carnival.
The day started with the course walk, with many students both excited and nervous as they were able to see the course firsthand and the challenges it presented. As the races got underway the house pride and enthusiasm were evident. There were lots of house chants and students cheered the runners as they started as well as when they crossed the finish line. The positive behaviour and enthusiasm of all students was commented on by both teachers and parents over the course of the day.
A big thank you to the parents and teachers who put in so much effort on the day making it the best carnival I have been involved in. The students are also congratulated for their efforts and behaviour over the day.
The top 3 runners in each age group will progress to the Diocesan Cross Country Carnival, which is to be held at Willandra on Tuesday, 2nd May.
As reported in our Week 6 newsletter, a number of students trialled for Wollongong representative teams in Hockey, League, Netball and Soccer.
On Friday 3 March, Year six students, Elise Campbell, Brooklyn Horwood and Olivia Seymour-Munn, travelled to Berkeley to participate in the Wollongong Diocesan Netball Trials. The trials were very well organised and conducted in a fair and encouraging manner.
The girls were each allocated to a trial team and played 3 games in their nominated positions. They played alongside and against some very talented netballers from across the Diocese. Following the five rounds of trial games, 18 of the 42 players were selected for the possibles and probables games. Elise, Brooklyn and Olivia each progressed to this stage and delivered impressive performances on the court, despite being very nervous.
At the conclusion of the final round, a team of 10 players was announced. All three girls were named in the Diocesan team, making St Michael’s the most successful school at the trials! It was so wonderful to see the girls rewarded for their dedication to netball and they should be very proud of themselves and their achievements.
Elise, Brooklyn and Olivia, will now compete in the MacKillop Netball trials in Canberra on Friday 5 May. We wish the girls the best of luck.
On Wednesday 8 March, Indie Aldridge, Zane Farrugia, Brayden Luxford and Orville Sakar, of Year 6, participated in the Wollongong Primary Football Trials at Unanderra Park. The conditions were quite hot, however, students brushed this aside and put in their best effort, displaying their skills through drills and games. This is a popular and competitive event with many students nominating, including 65 boys and 45 girls vying for squads of just 12 players. It is an absolute testament to these students who all play a high level of football in our region.
Congratulations to Brayden, for his selection in the boys squad. Brayden will now represent the Wollongong Diocese team in the NSW MacKillop Trials to be staged in Goulburn on Friday 26 May.
Oliver Atfield, Tyson Crowley and Cooper Green, of Year 6, and Seth Knight, Rory Megahey and Laykn Towns, of Year 5, participated in the 11's & 12's Rugby League trial and team selections. The weather conditions and grounds were in perfect condition and the level of talent, participation and energy of the students was at an impressive level.
Over 50 talented league players in the Wollongong Diocese attended the trials, playing 3 matches throughout the day. The boys enjoyed playing against other talented competitors and impressed selectors, with Cooper and Tyson chosen for the 12 boys team and Laykn selected in the 11’s team. Cooper, Tyson and Lakyn will represent in the NSW MacKillop trials to be staged in Canberra on Friday 5 May.
Abigail Doyle, from Grade 6, travelled to Macarthur Hockey Fields at Narellan on Friday 3 March to participate in the Wollongong Primary Hockey trials. This trial was used to identify individual students who are best suited to take part in the Mackillop Hockey Trials. Abigail had a great time at the trials and was put through skills and drills under the watchful eye of a 3 time Olympic hockey player, Casey Sablowski. Abigail enjoyed this fabulous opportunity improving her skills with the help of Casey.
On Tuesday 7 March, Mila Bozikiov, Abigail Doyle, Ava Edwards, Morten Ellerington, Havanah Flugler, Mason Fulop, Sachin and Yuin Hill, Kate McIntosh, Hanvana Miglioncio, Grace Riepsamen, Maddalin Russell, Grace Seller, Olivia Seymour Munn, Taylah Webb, Sophie, Jack and Thomas Webber travelled to Corrimal Pool to participate in the South Region Swimming Carnival. It was an early day for swimmers as they had to be at the pool for 9am.
Well done to all swimmers for their superb efforts and thank you to Mrs Baran for organising the students at the carnival.
Special mention to Sophie Webber on her qualification to represent at the Diocesan Swimming Trial Carnival at Corrimal Pool on 13 March. Well done to Sophie for the tremendous efforts in swimming the 9 Year Girls 50m Freestyle and Junior girls 200m Medley.
