Dear Parents and Carers,
During the last two weeks there has been an increase in student and staff sickness. Hopefully this current wave is passing and we will see a return to school from early next week. The school appreciates the measures families take to keep their children at home when they are unwell.
Over the last two weeks, students, staff and parents have had an opportunity to participate in an online survey called, ‘Tell Them From Me’. Developed by The Learning Bar, and used extensively across Australia, the student, teacher, and parent/caregiver surveys will enable schools within the Wollongong Diocese to measure and understand the factors that are known to have a direct and profound impact on well-being and student learning within our school. Thank you to those families who have participated in this survey. The link for parents will close later today. The survey is anonymous and will only take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Please follow this link to the survey and complete it today if you have not had an opportunity up to this date.
Due to the challenging weather in the last three weeks, the Wollongong Diocesan Cross Country will be proceeding at Willandra Course as planned, on Tuesday 28 May. Our P&F team will be running the canteen at this event and we urgently require volunteers to assist, even just for a short time. If you or your extended family & friends are able to help, please email stmichaelspnf@gmail.com.
Thank you again to Mr Allmark, school staff and members of our Parents and Friends group who have been preparing to host the event. Best wishes to the students who will represent our school. We look forward to sharing the results with all families.
Kindergarten interviews for students wishing to commence at our school in 2025 will conclude next week. It is certainly a privilege to interview these future St Michael’s students and their families. In 2024 the enrolment application information has been provided to the school through an online process. Successful applicants for 2025 will be sent offers towards the end of June. If you have friends, neighbours or relatives who are intending to enrol their child in St Michael’s for Kindergarten next year, please direct them to apply this weekend as the number of enrolments is extremely high for 2025.
Last Friday students in Kindergarten and Year 1 attended the Parish mass at 10am in the Church. It was wonderful to see so many families join the children for this mass. These masses for grade groups will continue through 2024 and the schedule will be updated in the fortnightly newsletter. Parents, friends and students who are baptised Catholic and have received their First Holy Communion are able to receive Communion at any masses that they attend. All non-Catholic adults are able to receive a blessing from Father Joseph or the priest who is facilitating the mass. To receive a blessing adults cross their arms over their chest.
Last Sunday the Catholic church celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. Known as Pentecost Sunday and celebrated fifty days after Easter, this feast day holds profound significance for Catholics worldwide as it commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, marking the birth of the Church. This event, described in the Acts of the Apostles, empowered the disciples to spread Jesus' teachings and perform miraculous deeds, symbolising the Holy Spirit's ongoing presence and guidance within the Church. For Catholics, Pentecost is a time of renewal and spiritual empowerment, emphasising the importance of the Holy Spirit in their faith and mission, and fostering a deeper sense of unity and purpose within the global Catholic community. For our present Year 6 students who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on the weekend of 29/30 June 2024, this feast day is particularly significant. Please keep these students in your prayers as they continue to prepare to receive the Holy Spirit through Confirmation.
Yours in faith and virtue

On Tuesday 21 May almost 80 students from Years 3 to 6 participated in the Netball Schools Cup at the Shoalhaven Netball Courts. With a mixture of both experienced and first time players, all students played together in the spirit of the game and enjoyed a fantastic time. The sportsmanship demonstrated by the students was exemplary and received commendations from teachers, umpires, and officials. Mrs. Roles expressed immense pride in each student's performance throughout the day.
This event was made possible by the invaluable contributions of the umpires who volunteered their time, the generous parents who guided our players, and our dedicated staff members, Ms. Betts, Mrs Butler, Mrs Brant, and Mrs Roles.
A special congratulations is extended to the 5/6B team, who have advanced to the regional finals in August. Well done to all the students, teachers, and volunteers for contributing to a successful day.
The 2024 Year 3-6 Primary Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 7 June. Due to the unavailability of the track at Shoalhaven High School, the event is taking place at Sanctuary Point with details available on Compass.
Parents/carers are asked to log on to the Compass Parent Portal to provide permission for their child/children to attend the event and also also nominate students if they wish to participate in the competitive section of the carnival. The competitive carnival is for students aiming to represent St Michael’s at the Diocesan South Coast Athletic trials in Wollongong on 13 August. Students not wishing to compete in the competitive events will participate in a non-timed, friendly race with their friends. Please note that entries for the Competitive Carnival close on Friday 31 May and no late entries will be accepted due to the time required to organise and allocate students to events.
Upcoming Events;
Diocesan Cross Country – Tuesday 28 May (Selected students only)
Yr 5 & 6 AFL Paul Kelly Cup – Friday 31 May (Nominated students)
Year 3-6 School Athletics Carnival – Friday 7 June

Mr Andrew Allmark

MOTHER'S DAY EVENT SUCCESS
We are delighted to announce that our Mother's Day events were a tremendous success! We raised a total of $5,445.98, thanks to our amazing sponsors, SRC helpers, volunteers, and everyone who contributed their time and effort. Your dedication and generosity have truly made a difference.
A special mention to the following students who assisted with the Mother's Day Stall sales;
Maddalin Russell, Amelia Lee, Allison Edwards, Sophie Palmer, Cooper Parker, Ari Shannon, Nina Montgomery, Josh Jirgens, Sophie Webber and Jack Webber.
The money raised will go towards improving our school grounds.
UPCOMING DIOCESE CROSS COUNTRY
The Diocesan Cross Country event at Willandra Course is on Tuesday 28 May. St Michael’s P&F will be managing the canteen at this event. Unfortunately, due to the postponement, many of our Committee members are unable to assist, and without more volunteers, we may not be able to run the canteen. We need volunteers to help staff the canteen between 8 am and 2 pm. Whether you can spare an hour or the whole day, your help would be greatly appreciated. If you can help, please email us at stmichaelspnf@gmail.com.
NEW MARQUEES
BACK OVAL MASTER PLAN
The St Michaels P&F have been busy fundraising throughout the past 18 months, and with help from parents, carers, friends, and the broader school community, we are able to commence the preliminary work on our long-term back oval project.
As you may be aware, the back oval is in need of a little TLC. Our goal is to design, upgrade, and rejuvenate this school space over the next 5 years. We plan to undertake staged reconstruction to provide two level playing fields, infants' play equipment, soft fall, nature play/garden, and outdoor learning space. We hope to release the master plan later this year.
UNIFORM SURVEY FEEDBACK
Thank you to all our parents and friends for participating in the Uniform Survey sent out in Term 2. Members of the P&F Committee, along with Mrs Rutkowski & Mr Paton, had their first meeting on Monday 13 May to review the survey feedback. The results of this meeting and further feedback will be provided in due course.
GRANTS OFFICER POSITION VACANT
Our P&F Committee currently have an Executive Position available for a Grants Officer. This position is ideal for someone who is eager to help identify and apply for grants to support various school projects. The role involves collaborating with the P&F and the school to secure funding for identified projects. If you are interested and able to assist, please send your expression of interest to stmichaelspnf@gmail.com.
Warm regards,
St Michael's P&F Committee
LAUDATO SI' WEEK
"Care for our Common Home"
Year 6 also were involved with Catholic Earthcare Laudato Si’ Week Q&As 30-minute sessions on Zoom, where students discovered how Caritas is responding to the messages in Laudato Si', asking questions about what Laudato Si’ is, and taking action through the 'Together We Can' campaign activities.
