Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I would like to express my sincere thanks to the St Michael’s community for their condolences following my mother's passing a couple of weeks ago. Prayers were expressed in the classroom, cards and flowers were received, many staff made personal contact with me and Father Joseph dedicated one of the class masses to my mother’s memory. My four siblings and I are thankful for her wonderful life which was celebrated through her funeral at St Mark’s Drummoyne in Sydney. I would like to thank Mrs Rutkowski, the school leadership and the school staff who supported the students and families during my absence.
The term has continued at a rapid pace. Two weeks ago the Year 6 students and numerous staff attended the annual Canberra excursion. This is such a highlight of the students’ time at St Michael’s Nowra and was again a very successful excursion. In the last newsletter, Mrs Rutkowski thanked the staff who attended. The effort and energy that goes into planning the excursion and ensuring the safety of all is extraordinary. The excursion leader, Mrs Dempsey, coordinated all aspects of the educational experience and ensured that everything went smoothly. The year 6 students were exemplary and were consistently complimented on their good behaviour and respect. Again, thank you to Mrs Dempsey, Mr Spain, Mr Harrison, Mrs Luxford, Mrs McKenna, Mrs Rutkowski, Mrs Nicholls, Mrs Cox and Miss Cook who attended the Canberra excursion. Well done team!
Three days later, many families gathered on the back oval for the Father's Day BBQ. Thank you to our P&F for their organisation and cooking on the day, and I would like to acknowledge Nowra Farmers Market for their donation of eggs, bacon and sausages for the BBQ.
Last week the school hosted the annual Grandparents liturgy which was held on the new grass area. Over 400 grandparents attended this celebration which is always a wonderful opportunity to honour the wisdom and love that grandparents share with us. This day serves as a reminder to cherish and acknowledge the important role grandparents play in shaping our lives and our family heritage. During this liturgy, we always remember the role that St Joachim and Anne played in the life of Jesus. The students who read and led the liturgy did an outstanding job. Following the liturgy, grandparents visited classrooms and then were led to the library to have the opportunity to participate in the Book Fair organised by Mrs McKenna. Thank you for the books that were purchased and the effort by Mrs McKenna, parent volunteers and staff to ensure the success of the Book Fair.
On Wednesday 4 September 2024, the Year 3 students, staff and some parents attended the excursion to the Nan Tien Temple in Berkeley. Students were there for three hours and experienced a 1 hr Guided Tour & Museum Visit, an opportunity to engage in Chinese Calligraphy and a Mindful Mealtime consisting of a vegetarian meal of fried rice, potato wedges and spring rolls. The behaviour of the students was excellent. Thank you to all staff and parents who supported this excursion.
Last Friday Kindergarten students, staff and some parents attended the annual excursion to Shoalhaven Zoo. This was a big excursion for our little Kindergarten people and was very successful. Many of you would have seen the beautiful photos shared through social media over the weekend. I can guarantee it was an early night for all Kindergarten students and adults who attended the excursion. Thank you to our wonderful staff and parents who assisted to make the excursion so successful.

Yesterday, our two school captains, Bridget Gonzaga and Jack Butler, were accompanied by our Year 5 teacher Mrs Cathy Palmer to the Catholic Education Office Wollongong launch of ‘Catholic Mission Month.’ Our school travelled with representatives from St Mary’s Milton and St John’s Nowra in their school minibus, driven by Mr Wayne Marshall, Principal of St John’s Nowra. The launch was held at St Michael’s Primary School, Thirroul. Catholic Mission Month occurs in October each year and is a time dedicated to raising awareness and support for global missions and the vital work of spreading the Gospel. During this month, local parishes and communities come together to engage in fundraising activities, educational programs, and prayer initiatives that highlight the needs of the poor and marginalised. Events and activities are designed to deepen participants' understanding of global mission efforts and encourage active involvement in supporting these causes. This month reflects the Church’s commitment to reaching out in love and solidarity to those in need around the world.
Today Year 5 and 6 attended Nowra Cinema to watch the movie version of a novel they have been studying this term, ‘Wild robot’. Year 2 have a similar excursion next Tuesday to watch ‘Runt’.
As the term comes to a finish, a couple of sporting and school events will occur, including:
- A Year 3 & 4 Basketball Gala day
- The overnight Year 5 Leadership Camp at Waterslea on 19 & 20 September
- Public speaking finals for Years 5 & 6
- The judging of the Christmas Art Competition.
During this time of the year, some teachers apply and are given Long Service Leave which is an entitlement through the industrial award. Presently, Mr Jason Harrison (6B) is on Long Service Leave until the end of the term and the replacement teacher is Mrs Hart. The following teachers will be on long service Leave in Week 9 and Week 10 of this term.
- Mrs Anne Dempsey (6W)
- Ms Emma-Kate Callaghan
- Mr Allmark (5R) (Week 10)
All students will return to school for Term 4 on Tuesday 15 October 2024. School staff will be participating in professional development on Monday 14 October 2024. Please also note Friday 22 November 2024 as the other staff development day during Term 4. Further reminders about the return to school date will be sent home as a Compass alert over the next four weeks. DANCE SHOWCASE
Students in Year 5 and 6 studied environmental concerns during their Term 2 Drama lessons. Complementing this learning, this term Year 5 & 6 have been composing and choreographing a short dance piece based on Dr Seuss' 'classic childrens' tale, The Lorax'. The Lorax explores the interconnected world of nature and the possible damage if we don't act responsibly, providing a timeless call to protect and preserve our natural resources.
ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUESTED TO WEAR BLACK CLOTHING FOR THEIR PERFORMANCE. Students are to bring black clothes in with them to change into for their performance day. Some groups may have organised extra costume items, however this has been organised and decided by each individual group.
FINN ACHIEVES TWO NATIONAL MEDALS
Finn Goddard of Year 4, represented New South Wales at the Australian National Cross Country Championships in Launceston, Tasmania on Saturday 31 August 2024.
Competing against the top 38 Cross Country athletes in Australia, the cold (9 degree celcius) weather conditions created an additional challenge with rain, wind and an unfamiliar muddy, waterlogged course.
Finn executed his run beautifully, showing sheer determination to get out of the gates quickly, to avoid being stuck in the pack with the potential for a slip and fall.
Finn held his position to finish the race in 3rd place, just 2 seconds behind the winner to claim the Australian Championship bronze medal. Finn's impressive run also contributed to NSW taking home the Gold medal in the team event, being the first state to have 3 runners complete the course!
We are so proud of Finn's commitment, humble attitude and determination finishing his Cross Country season for 2024 !
Well done Finn!
SPORT IN 2025
Throughout 2025, students will be provided with multiple sporting opportunities including school sport carnivals (swimming, athletics, cross country) and gala days (including netball, soccer, basketball and cricket). These events are opportunities for all students to participate and develop their skills, enjoyment, be part of a team, improve wellbeing and contribute to a positive school culture.
Some students in Years 5 and 6 in 2025 will be provided with the opportunity to access representative levels of sporting pathways, and opportunities to progress into state representation through trialling for Wollongong representative teams with the Diocese of Wollongong Sports Council.
Nominations for the 2025 representative pathway selection trials are now open. Details on how to nominate your child were sent to Year 4 & 5 2024 Parents/Carers via Compass on 19 September and may be accessed here.
Nominations for Cricket, Basketball and Tennis are due by 19 September 2024.
Nominations for all other sports are due by 15 November 2024.
No late nominations will be accepted.
Some of the trials for 2025 teams will commence in Term 4 2024, therefore it is important that nominations are completed now.
Students at St Michael’s have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Gala Days. Whilst there are a lot of events offered by different organisations we are unable to participate in every event. Moving forward, our school will attend only Diocesan-organised Sport Gala Days .
This decision has been made after careful consideration of the impact that attending these additional gala days has on our school’s staffing. Ensuring that our students receive the best possible education is our primary responsibility, and the demands placed on staff to manage both regular teaching duties and additional off-site sporting events has become increasingly challenging.
By focusing on Diocesan-organised events, we can maintain a balance that supports both our students' academic and extracurricular activities without compromising the quality of education or the well-being of our staff. These Diocesan events provide a well-structured and inclusive environment for our students to engage in sports, develop their skills, and represent our school with pride.
We understand that sport is an essential part of our students' development, and we remain committed to offering students enriching opportunities to participate in organised sports. We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we make these adjustments to better serve our school community.

Thank you to everyone who supported Legacy Week. The combined total of funds raised by St Michael's Primary and St John's High School was a fabulous $1,600!
Thank you to the students and parents who helped at the stalls to sell the Legacy merchandise. We are very grateful to you and proud of your efforts!
Year 6 students attended an overnight education tour of the national capital on Thursday 29 & Friday 30 August 2024. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program towards this excursion. The rebate will be paid directly to the school.
FATHER’S DAY RECAP
We are excited to announce the winners of our Father's Day Raffle. Thank you to our school community for purchasing tickets and supporting this fundraiser.
A special thanks to all the dads and father figures who attended our Father's Day Breakfast BBQ. It was a lovely morning celebrating our you all. We would like to provide a special mention to Steven Nicholas, Marg and Ash Gasseling, Stacey Jarrett, Caroline and Cohen Jirgens, Tim New, Lisa Webber, Catherine Montgomery, and Carina Beattie for their incredible help in making the event such a hit. We are also grateful to Nowra Farmers Market for their generous sponsorship of our event.
Our Father's Day Stall was busier than ever this year, and we couldn’t have done it without our amazing volunteers: Emma Lucke, Jacqueline Klusenberg, Sherine Thomas, Sophie and Jack Webber, Cooper Lucke, Nina Montgomery, Ari Shannon and our amazing P&F Committee. Thanks to their hard work, we raised an incredible amount to help secure a new storage space for the P&F. The Father's Day Stall raised an impressive $1,653.61, the Father's Day Raffle brought in $1,202.96, and we received $108.70 in donations from the Father's Day BBQ. These contributions will go a long way in supporting our efforts to secure the much-needed storage space. Thank you once again to everyone involved!
Thank you again to everyone for making this year’s Father's Day celebrations a success!
