Dear Parents,
Catholic Schools Week
This week all Catholic schools in NSW celebrate Catholic Schools Week. You may have heard and seen advertisements highlighting the virtues of Catholic schools on the radio and through other media. This week is also the official launch of our enrolment period for 2021. On Monday we commenced the week with the following prayer which highlights what we are trying to do at St Michael’s Nowra:
Dear Lord
Catholic Schools Week is a special time in the year when we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our Catholic schools. It is a time to give thanks for the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place each day in every classroom.
- We acknowledge and thank all who work in the service of Catholic education to create the opportunities for students that allow them to grow and thrive.
Lord Hear Us (Lord Hear Our Prayer)
- We thank you for
- the wisdom and understanding of teachers
- the enthusiasm and energy of students
- the leadership of school Principals and leadership staff
- the skill, care and commitment of administrative and support staff
- the guidance of our priests and religious leaders
- the support and partnership of parents, carers and local communities.
Lord Hear Us (Lord Hear Our Prayer)
- We pray that each student’s learning journey be inspired by a search for your wisdom and truth.
Lord Hear Us (Lord Hear Our Prayer)
- We pray that we never take for granted the learning opportunities that we have all been given, and that we use the gifts of learning wisely and responsibly.
Lord Hear Us (Lord Hear Our Prayer)
- We ask that we use what we have learnt to create a better world for all people, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Lord Hear Us (Lord Hear Our Prayer)
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
The best way to spread the good news about Catholic Schools is through ‘word of mouth’. If you know of families who have children planning to attend Kindergarten in 2021, please let them know about us. Interviews will occur in May.
Tonight, the Wollongong Diocese celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a mass at St John Vianney Co-Cathedral. A number of our staff make the journey to Wollongong every year to attend this mass which is very significant in 2020 with the arrival of our new Director of Schools, Peter Hill.
Today a number of our students attended the South Coast Swimming carnival. These students have trained very hard to prepare for the carnival and some of them will progress to the Wollongong Diocesan carnival on Monday 9th March. We will update you on their achievements next week.
Next Tuesday night is the monthly Parents and Friends meeting. The meeting commences at 6pm and is usually completed by 7.15pm. Our new executive look forward to parents, especially new ones, joining us as we plan events for the students as well as look at fundraising possibilities for 2020.
I have attached a letter from Bishop Brian Mascord outlining changes to occur when parents and students attend mass in our Diocese of Wollongong. The main change for our students is during the sign of peace. Children and adults have been asked to not shake hands due to the Corona Virus situation. Please refer to the Bishop's letter for full details.
Finally, attached to this letter is information regarding student safety before and after school.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton

Lent is an opportunity to try and live life more simply. The following words from Mother Theresa of Calcutta can assist in helping us get our priorities right:
Prayer:
Take time to ...
Take time to think, it is the source of power;
Take time to play, it is the secret of perpetual youth;
Take time to read, it is the fountain of wisdom.
Take time to pray, it is the greatest power on earth.
Take time to be friendly, it is the road to happiness.
Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul;
Take time to give, it is too short a day to be selfish.
Take time to work, it is the price of success.
Take time to do charity, it is the key to heaven.
Take time to love and be loved, it is a God given privilege.
Mother Theresa of Calcutta
Almsgiving
This term the St. Michael’s school community will be almsgiving during Lent. Each class has a Project Compassion box. Remember, this money raised will go directly to Caritas Australia’s work in supporting the Indigenous people of the Philippines.
St Michael’s are always so generous in supporting others less fortunate. Thank you.
Later this term our Mini Vinnies will be holding a before school café where hot cross buns, milos, tea and coffee will be served. Hope you will be able to join us.

Catholic Schools Week (CSW) will be held from 1 -7 March. Our theme this year is ‘Embracing our future together’.
CSW is about celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of Catholic education and is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of our school community. CSW also marks the beginning of the Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong enrolment period.
Enrolments are now open for Kindergarten 2021. Please click here to access a CEDoW school enrolment package or pop into the office to pick one up.
A message from Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong for Catholic Schools Week 2020
Dear students, families and school communities,
Thank you for your school's participation in Catholic Schools Week from 1-7 March. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and showcase many of the fantastic things happening in your school every day, and in all our Catholic schools across the Diocese of Wollongong.
We thank you for working together in partnership with us to help make your school community such a vibrant, nurturing place of learning, faith, belonging and hope.
If you or a family member or friend would like to enrol your child in one of our schools, please download an enrolment package here.
Have a look at our Catholic Schools Week video below, celebrating what our students across the diocese love about their Catholic school. Can you spot the students from your school?
Last week three students represented St. Michael’s at the Wollongong Diocese in Basketball and Tennis.
Taya Sanchez from Year 5 was one of four students in the Diocese to make the Wollongong tennis team. Across the day Taya played 3 singles matches. She was up against some very talented players and could only get one win. Taya was unfortunate to miss out on making the MacKillop Team.
Josie Schaeffer, Indiana Hayburn and Harry Frew were all chosen for the Diocesan Basketball team. Unfortunately, Harry sustained an injury prior to the competition and could not participate in the day. Josie and Indiana represented both the school and Diocese with great determination. The girls played 4 games over the day and came up against some tough competition from Sydney, Wagga Wagga, Canberra and Goulburn teams and came away with one win. Even though the girls put their might and effort into the games they were not successful in making the MacKillop team.
Today, we have 21 students representing St. Michael’s at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival in Corrimal. The students will be competing against other students in the Diocese in the hope of making the Diocesan Swim Team. We wish the students competing today the best of luck and hope we have some fantastic news to share with you next week.
We have a number of students competing for selection for a Diocesan team in Soccer, Netball and Rugby League. We wish the best of luck to;
- Maddy Butler, Jasmine Edwards and Anna Duncan for trials in Netball.
- Thomas Faulkner and Brodee Green for their trials in Rugby League (postponed).
- Sonny Jamieson, Jett Goddard and Beau Lynch for their trials in Soccer.
The AFL Paul Kelly Cup being held at Artie Smith Oval in Bomaderry has been postponed to Friday 3rd April.
Finally, on Sunday some GWS Giants players are coming down to Nowra and surrounding areas to help pitch in with the clean-up effort from the bush fires that occurred over the summer. On Sunday afternoon, the GWS Giants players will be running a free clinic for children and extremely eager parents at Shoalhaven Giants home ground at West Street Oval from 5pm to 7:30pm. A free BBQ will be also run on the night.
Upcoming sporting events at school:
- School Cross Country 24th March
- Diocesan Swim Carnival 5th March
- Football, League and Netball Diocesan trials 6th March
- Paul Kelly Cup 3rd April
- Yr 3 and 4 AFL Gala Day 19th March
