Dear Parents,
During the last week a number of our students have been representing our school at sporting events. Congratulations to these students and thank you to parents who have accompanied them to the various events. From all feedback, these students have displayed great sportsmanship – an essential element of being a good athlete. A full summary will be provided in Mr Allmark’s sports report.
Earlier this week our Parents and Friends had their monthly meeting. Thank you to those who attended. We would love to have more parents at this monthly meeting. Two donations were approved for reading books ($2500) and some band musical instruments ($1500). The money for the musical instruments was raised through the Commonwealth Student Banking. Over a period of time the commission for each transaction builds into a sizeable donation. Thank you to Therese Ganderton and Jacinta Davis who week after week spend numerous hours doing the banking. Their commitment is outstanding. We are about to submit a Development Application to council for the implementation of a new LED school sign. The P&F have raised and approved the funds to be spent on this project. The commitment of our whole P&F to raise funds for this project, Large TVs and technology has also been outstanding. Thank you again to our outgoing committee and best wishes to our new committee.
On Tuesday the students and staff from Year 1 attended a stage production of ‘The Gruffalo’. Students and staff enjoyed the show. I look forward to reading their stories about the show.
Next week a number of students will have their Personal Plan (PP) meetings. We ask parents to sign in at the front office and they will be directed to a meeting space. These Personal Plans are for students with varying identified needs and include some individual goals to assist the students.
CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) update. At this stage our school has not been immediately impacted by the virus. We are encouraging the students to wash their hands regularly. We do ask parents to keep children home if they are experiencing ‘flu type’ symptoms and to seek medical advice if necessary. If you have any concerns about the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), please contact me immediately and I will follow up your concerns. I will send out any updates that I receive from CEO Wollongong.
Yours in Faith and Virtue,
Mr Christopher Paton

Lent is an opportunity to try and live life more simply. The following words from Mother Theresa of Calcutta can assist in helping us get our priorities right:
Prayer:
Take time to ...
Take time to think, it is the source of power;
Take time to play, it is the secret of perpetual youth;
Take time to read, it is the fountain of wisdom.
Take time to pray, it is the greatest power on earth.
Take time to be friendly, it is the road to happiness.
Take time to laugh, it is the music of the soul;
Take time to give, it is too short a day to be selfish.
Take time to work, it is the price of success.
Take time to do charity, it is the key to heaven.
Take time to love and be loved, it is a God given privilege.
Mother Theresa of Calcutta
Almsgiving
This term the St. Michael’s school community will be almsgiving during Lent. Each class has a Project Compassion box. Remember, this money raised will go directly to Caritas Australia’s work in supporting the Indigenous people of the Philippines.
St Michael’s are always so generous in supporting others less fortunate. Thank you.
Later this term our Mini Vinnies will be holding a before school café where hot cross buns, milos, tea and coffee will be served. Hope you will be able to join us.

Over the past week we have had some very busy students in a variety of sporting areas. These students have either been trialling for Wollongong Representative teams or representing St. Michael’s in swimming.
Last Thursday we had 21 students representing St. Michael’s at the South Coast Diocesan Swim Trials at Corrimal Pool. It was not the best day for swimming as the students had to compete with not only the top swimmers from other diocesan schools but the weather as the rain stuck around for the day. All the students that went to this carnival put in an almighty effort and pulled off one of the school’s most successful meets in a long time. St. Michael’s came 4th overall due to all the swimmer’s fantastic efforts. Listed below are some of the outstanding performances achieved by students at St. Michael’s.

- 2nd Snr 50m Breaststroke
- 1st Snr 200m Medley
The effort and application that Harley puts into swimming saw him crowned Age Champion for the 12 year old boys.
So good were these results that some of the students went back to Corrimal on the 9th March to trial for the Wollongong Swim team. Listed below are the outstanding achievements achieved by some of the students.

Anya, Harley and the Senior Boys Relay team all qualified for the Wollongong Diocesan team and are preparing to go to Homebush Aquatic Swim Centre on the 25th March to complete and trial for the Mackillop Swim team. We wish these students the best of luck with this carnival.
Last Friday, Maddy Butler, Jasmine Edwards and Anna Duncan trialled for the Wollongong Diocesan Netball team. These girls were up against 50 very talented players from the Wollongong Diocese in the hope of making one of the ten spots in the team. On the day the girls played 6 games under the watchful eye of the coaches and eventually 10 players were selected. Jasmine Edwards was one of those netballers to be selected for the Wollongong Diocesan team.
Also last Friday, Sonny Jamieson, Jett Goddard and Beau Lynch trialled for the Diocesan Soccer team. They were up against over 50 talented soccer players. The boys played 3 games over the day. Like the girls they were always under the watchful gaze of the coaches. From the 50 players only 14 players were selected for the team. Beau Lynch was one of the boys who were selected for the team.
Yesterday, Brodee Green and Tom Faulkner tried out for the Diocesan Rugby League team. Like the other two trials they were up against 40 quality Rugby League players. The boys were put through various drills and games in the hope of being selected for the team. Both Tom and Brodee were selected for this team.
It looks like St Michael’s is in for a big sporting year. Congratulations to all the students who were selected for a Wollongong team and to those who trialled as well.
Next week, Years 3 and 4 will be competing in an AFL Gala Day at Nowra Showground. If there are any parents who are willing to help out on the day (must have a current Work with Children number) can you please contact your child’s teacher or myself.
Finally, on the 24th March, the school will be holding its annual Cross Country at Willandra for students in Years 3 to 6. The students will be running or walking 2km. We are finalising the lists of students who are running and walking. If you have not done so already, can you please return the permission note back to your child’s teacher. If you are able to assist on the day, that would be greatly appreciated.
Upcoming sporting events at school:
Yr 3 and 4 AFL Gala Day 19th March
School Cross Country 24th March
Touch League Trials 31st March
Paul Kelly Cup 3rd April
If you have any questions about sports or any events coming up, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Variety Livvi's Place - Marriott Park
Thanks to the amazing students of St Michael’s Primary School for helping us design our new inclusive playspace – Variety Livvi’s Place at Marriott Park.
We talked about what it means to be included, how it feels when you are excluded and the kids were extremely insightful about what we will need to make sure our new playspace will be a truly inclusive space where we can all play together.
You can also help us design your new playspace – Variety and Shoalhaven City Council are asking the children and families of Nowra to share how they would like to play and what they would like to do & have in our new inclusive Playspace.
Please fill out a quick survey to have your say –It’s a great thing to do together with your children.
Join our facebook group to stay informed & help us build your new playspace.
