Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to Term 3. I hope all of our families are coping with the current health realities that COVID-19 and Influenza are still providing us with. The students and staff have returned with optimism and it has been a great start to the new term. The school is doing its best to work through the current teacher shortages and provide a teacher to be in front of our students. All available staff including the leadership team, are filling in where teachers are absent due to sickness. However, like all other schools in Australia, there will still be occasions where a class may need to be split. The staff and I thank you for your understanding. I would like to acknowledge our wonderful staff who have continued to provide a calm and welcoming face to the students each day.
In recent months, new office staff have been appointed. Mrs Julie Vella is the Senior School Support Officer (office manager) and Mrs Sue Rankin will be the first contact in the office each Monday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Jessia Webster will be the first contact in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would like to both welcome and thank our three office staff who often need to make the difficult phone calls if a student needs to be collected due to exhibiting COVID-19 or Influenza symptoms. These staff are strictly following NSW Health directives. I am aware that this can be an inconvenience to parents but I do appreciate that these phone calls are received respectfully and students are collected promptly. I would like to thank parents and caregivers for their assistance with keeping a child at home if they have even the slightest symptoms. Your respect for school staff and the front line service they are providing to our families in St Michael’s Nowra is most appreciated.
By the end of this week, most parent teacher meetings to discuss the Semester 1 student reports will have been completed. If you have not yet had an opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher due to sickness or other reasons, please ring the school office to make an appointment. The teachers will look at their availability and the office will call you back to confirm a time and date.
While our Religious Education Coordinator Mrs Mathieson is on Long Service Leave, I will continue to update parents on what important events are occurring. Please note the following:
- The Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA) practice for Year 4 students occurred yesterday and the actual RLA will occur on Monday 1 August. Students in Year 4 are using their ipads to complete these tests.
- ACTIVATE, a day of religious and spiritual celebration coordinated by the Diocese of Wollongong team, will occur on Tuesday 26 July for Year 6 students from St Michael’s Nowra and St Mary’s Milton in the School Hall from 9.30am - 2.00pm.
- Class Masses will commence from Week 3 with Year 4 students and parents attending. Further details will be provided to these families next week. In Week 4 the Year 3 students will attend mass and in Week 5 it will be the Year 2 students. Parents and Caregivers are invited to attend these masses.
- The Confirmation Parent/Candidate “Signs and Symbols Meeting” will occur on Wednesday 3 August at 6pm in the School Hall. It is necessary for Year 6 students and a family member to attend this meeting. Students are to bring the commitment form to the meeting
- The annual Mass with the Bishop and Year 6 students will occur on Thursday 11 August at Shellharbour commencing 10.30am
I have been monitoring the car park opposite the church this week and would like to congratulate the parents and caregivers for their respectful driving and parking. Please continue to park the cars as per the attached map and remember that the car park IS NOT a stop and drop zone. Cars must be parked before students get out of the vehicles. Thank you for your parking assistance, especially during the current spate of poor weather.

St Vincent de Paul - Winter Appeal
Our mufti day last term supporting Vinnies Winter Appeal was a huge success. We had four baskets of beanies and scarves, and raised $670 through our gold coin donations.
Additionally, several of our students held a Lemonade/Juice Stand raising a further $170, brining our total to $850 - a wonderful effort!
Thank you for your generosity in helping those less fortunate.

Our NAIDOC Assembly will now be held on Friday 5 August at 9.30am. All parents are welcome to attend the NAIDOC Assembly and the morning tea following. This will be a wonderful celebration of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture and will highlight the gifts and talents of our students.
As you are aware we had to cancel the Athletics Carnival due to the continuous poor weather and numerous ground closures. I am looking at running off the nomination selections on Friday 22nd July. If this fails to go ahead due the to the poor weather, I will look to hold it on a fine day in week 2.
At the end of last term, Taj Goddard and Noah Jamieson travelled to participate in the MacKillop Rugby trials. The boys had an afternoon training session with NSW Rugby development officers and an additional hour as a team training session. The following day Taj and Noah played 5 tough games against some big boys who they compared to as a mini Latrell Mitchell. Their team came away with 2 wins, and a draw. Both boys put in extremely solid performances, Noah Jamieson was a standout on the wing and was selected in the MacKillop team. Congratulations to Noah on his selection.
I have been contacted by Netball NSW who are holding this Year’s Koori Gala Day on Sunday 18th September at the Shoalhaven Netball Association. This is open to all ages and is a mixed event. The cost is $40 per team. For further details click on the following link; https://www.playhq.com/netball-australia/register/9e13b4

Please label all items clearly.

Welcome back to Term three! I hope everyone has had a restful and fun school holiday. The Defence Lunch Club is back and we have been busy crafting, building Lego and growing plants in our garden. A note regarding times for each grade's Defence Club will be sent out soon via Seesaw. Please remember to inform the office staff or myself of any upcoming periods of deployment or time away so that I can ensure your child receives some extra support throughout that time. I would also like to inform our Defence families that I have now commenced the position of Defence School Mentor at St John the Evangelist High School. I am very excited to have the opportunity to support the Defence families at both St Michael's and St Johns. Have a wonderful week.

The Christmas Story Art Exhibition and Competition
Catholic schools from the Diocese of Wollongong are invited to take part in The Christmas Story, 2022 - a visual arts exhibition and competition for children in Stage Three.
This is an initiative of the Catholic Education Offices in Wollongong and Sydney to celebrate and explore children’s creative and artistic ability in illustrating the Christmas story.
This exhibition and competition provides the opportunity for teachers to select artworks from Years 5 and 6 to share with the wider community and create a greater awareness of the role of the arts in Religious Education. Children can develop deeper appreciation for their talents and recognise the value of the arts in expressing understandings of the Catholic faith. The subject matter is drawn from the Religious Education Curriculum and includes additional verses from the Gospel of Matthew.
This year the judges are again looking for artworks that reflect an understanding and interpretation of one of the scripture verses that also includes authentic imagery from the time of Jesus. This imagery can be represented in any style. Students can consider tableware, clothing, architecture, vegetation, food and other aspects of their visual representation of the scriptures.
All Year 5 and 6 students at St Michael’s Nowra will complete this artwork as part of their Religion lessons in Term 3.
St John's Musical - The Curse of the Mummy
With school returning for Term 3, it is the time to remind all of the school community about the importance of road safety around our schools.
Children's Crossings are usually part-time crossings that operate before and after school hours, or at other times that may be approved by local councils. Aside from these times, the area is not a pedestrian crossing. When in use, orange flags displaying the words CHILDREN CROSSING are used. Drivers must slow down and halt before the stop line when a pedestrian is on the crossing or waiting to cross – and remain stopped until all pedestrians leave the crossing.
The following animation highlights the difference between children’s crossings and pedestrian crossings, and what motorists need to do on approach to each type of crossing.
School Crossing - Position Vacant
The School Crossing Program is advertising for a permanent school crossing supervisor for Kangaroo Valley Public School. Please see below for further information.
