Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Kindergarten 2023
Over the last four weeks, many of the new Kindergarten students for 2023 have attended a number of playgroups in the school library. Numerous staff have met the new students and their families. These playgroups have allowed our staff to learn valuable information about the students, how they play independently, who they play with and types of activities they like to do. Thank you to all of our staff who have been involved and thank you to the families who attended.
Grandparents Day Mass
Last Friday our school welcomed our grandparents and families to a special mass which honoured grandparents and also acknowledged the recent feast day of St Michael. Mrs Mathieson and staff prepared the students for the mass. Their reverence was outstanding. After the mass, families went to the classrooms with the students and then joined them for recess. Numerous families visited the parish centre on the way out for scones, jam and tea or coffee. It was wonderful having so many families join us on the day. Thank you to Mrs Royston for turning our hall into a church setting, and thank you to Mrs McMillan and the wonderful morning tea helpers.
First Holy Communion
On Wednesday 2 November 2022, students receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist (First Holy Communion) gathered in the hall for a reflection evening led by Father Joseph, supported by the teachers and parish helpers. These students will celebrate this Sacrament on Sunday 20 November 2022. Please keep in your prayers these students and their families.
School Visit
On Tuesday, the Director of Catholic Education in Wollongong, Mr Peter Hill visited our school to meet with staff and students. A number of class visits were conducted. Mr Hill thoroughly enjoyed his four hours at our school and commented on the warm welcome given to him by students and staff. Mr Hill discussed the school’s strategic direction as well as Diocesan matters. A new CEO Wollongong ‘Strategic Plan’ is being launched in 2023. Further details will be forthcoming early next year.
Fun Run
Yesterday we had our first School Fun Run - Colour Run for a number of years and was the first major fundraising event for almost three years. Student fundraising reached over $40,000 with some costs to be deducted for prizes etc. The profit from this event will go towards outdoor facilities. Based on the fun and success of yesterday’s event (many students said it was the best day ever!), it will become an annual event and replaces the old ‘WALKATHON’ as an opportunity to involve all students, families, extended family and friends. Thank you to all students, especially those who were able to raise money for the school. The day was perfect in every way.
A big thank you is extended to our ‘Colour run’ convenor, Mrs Carina Beattie and the Parents and Friends executive who assisted Carina. To all parents who assisted in any way doing the numerous roles such as cooking, preparing food, assisting on the colour stations, setting up the activities, encouraging the students….. Thank you. To our wonderful staff led by Mrs Rutkowski and Mr Allmark, thank you. The leadership of our Year 6 students yesterday was outstanding. The St John’s students who assisted were great encouragers to the students. Group 7 Rugby League were represented by Ashton Sims and Talia Atfield who started the races and mingled with the students and families. Congratulations all!
Remembrance Day
Today we commemorate Remembrance Day. Mrs Natalie Hayes, our Defence Mentor, prepared a beautiful slideshow that each class used leading up to 11am. In our local Shoalhaven region, due to our strong ‘Defence’ presence, Remembrance Day is particularly significant. Many families have been and continue to be affected by deployment to all parts of the world in defence of our democratic Australian life. Our service men and women have travelled throughout Australia and the world to uphold the values that we as Australians cherish so much. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of the year 1918, an armistice was signed, ending the “war to end all wars” – World War I. Since then, November 11 has been set aside as Armistice Day, a day to pray for those who have died serving their country.
Remembrance Day reminds us to pray for peace, to think about what we are doing as individuals, as a community and as a country to bring God’s peace into the world. This is a time when a believing community should once again turn towards prayer and the call of the Gospel to love. Today we acknowledge and give thanks to every person who has served our country and those continuing to serve our country. To our ‘Defence’ families, thank you.
CDF Sports Awards
This evening Mr Allmark and I will be attending The Wollongong Diocesan Sports Awards, sponsored by the Catholic Development Fund. This award ceremony recognises students who have represented the school and Diocese at the highest level. Tonight four students from St Michael’s Nowra will receive awards. Congratulations to Finn Goddard, Taj Goddard, Noah Jamieson and Ella Walsh who will receive the awards. The guest speaker will be Amy Sligar, an elite Netball and AFL player who also attended St Paul’s Camden where I was previously Principal. Congratulations to our three students and their families.
St Michael’s Parish Sacramental News - Reconciliation
For many years, the students at St Michael's Nowra have received the various Sacraments following comprehensive instruction in the classrooms. The celebrations of these Sacraments, especially Confirmation and Eucharist (First Holy Communion) have been coordinated by the school in conjunction with the Parish. Essentially, the school prepared St Michael’s students and the Parish prepared the students in the State and Christian schools.
From 2023, a decision has been made by Father Joseph and the parish team for all Sacraments to be coordinated by the Parish using a different structure of preparation. All students in the Parish will receive the same Parent/Child booklet which will allow parents to be part of the preparation. Parent enrolment in the Sacramental Programme will occur during one of the masses on specified weekends. In this week’s Parish Newsletter Father Joseph has provided details about the enrolment process for the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) 2022/2023. The enrolment will commence this year and the Sacrament will occur in 2023. It will be necessary to attend one of the designated masses to enrol in the programme. For 2023, the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation) will be offered to the present Year 2 (2022) or older students who have not yet received this Sacrament. This means that from next year onwards, students in Year 3 or older will receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation), not Year 2 students as has previously been the case. Please call Mr Paton if further clarification is required.
All St Michael’s Nowra students in each of the Sacramental grades, Catholic and Non-Catholic, will continue to learn about the Sacrament as part of the school’s Religious Education program, ‘To Know, Worship and Love’.
Here is the Parish announcement about the Sacrament:
Sacrament of Penance Programme 2022/2023 Parents/carers are invited to enrol their children in the Penance (Reconciliation) Programme. Children must have been baptised and be in at least Year 2 in 2022, and be going into at least Year 3 in 2023. Children younger than this cannot be accepted into the programme. The initial weekend for enrolment in the programme is 26/27 November 2022 at all Masses at our Churches. If interested in enrolling, please be mindful of the requirement for parents/carers and their children to have a weekly presence at Sunday Mass. Family members need to be committed and motivated. If intending to be away on holidays during the programme – December, February, March – please leave enrolment until another time. However, in recognition that everyone needs to have a well-deserved holiday, the programme is not administered from Christmas until the end of January. Comprehensive Details will be contained in a programme timeline that will be distributed on 26/27 November. Father Joseph. |

Pastoral Support Worker - Introduction : Sharlene Gelle
Hello staff, families carers grandparents and students.
I will quickly introduce myself, my name is Sharlene Gelle and I'm very excited and proud to be welcomed by you all in my new role, as the new pastoral support worker I have been very welcomed by students, staff, and families in these past 3 weeks, for which I am most grateful. I've had the opportunity to visit some classrooms and attend Kindy 2023 playgroups. I can't thank the teachers enough for supporting me in building positive relationships with all the students. |
My role is to support and empower students. I aim to improve and foster an atmosphere for positive wellbeing, learning, resilience, fairness, and equal opportunities. I will be a listening ear in times of challenge where I will let your voice be heard, valued, and respected!
I will also work closely with your Wellbeing Coordinator Mr Douglas, the Defence Liaison Natalie, together with Counsellors Kelly and Kate. We will work as a team to support the wellbeing and safety of all students.
My location is upstairs next door to 4B Classroom (unless I'm in a classroom supporting children).
My days at St Michael's are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
My work email is: sharleneg@catholiccare.dow.org.au if you need to reach me.
May God bless you always!
Sharlene Gelle
Pastoral Support Worker
On Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October our Year 5 students attended their overnight Retreat at Waterslea. Students enjoyed the activities availalbe as indicated by the following reflections.
I never knew that you have so many things in your brain. Mr Douglas and Mr Holgate's activities were fun and very active. I enjoyed serving people at lunch. I had a fun time playing with my friends. I got to meet new people. |
On camp I discovered that a growth midset is important and easy to do. |
I discovered that having a growth mindset is cool and easy to have. I enjoyed the pool, slide and the hunt, it was fun but we needed more swimming time. |
On camp I discovered how to talk to new people. I talked to Jackson, Zack, Layla, Olivia SM, Koen, Matthew, Rixon, Jack and Gabe. |

Today is Remembrance Day. This is a special day in the year when we have the opportunity to pause and think about the sacrifices and lives lost by those who have served in our Defence forces. Over the last few weeks the students have had the opportunity to assist with painting almost 200 poppy flowers. These flowers have been placed on our school fence this morning to show our respect for Remembrance Day. The students have worked hard to get these poppy flowers ready and they have done a wonderful job in creating a beautiful Remembrance Day art installation. Thank you to all the students who helped, you should feel very proud of your efforts. A Remembrance Day slideshow has also been created and provided to each of our teachers so that they can commemorate Remembrance Day as a class after recess. Thank you to our teachers for providing the students with an opportunity to reflect on and learn more about Remembrance Day. |
Swimming Carnival
This year we are trialling a Swimming Carnival for all students in Years 2 to 6. This carnival will be held at Bomaderry Pool on Friday 2 December. The swimming carnival will be held in two parts:
- Part 1: Competitive Swimming Carnival
- Part 2: Non-Competitive Swimming Carnival
PART 1: Competitive Swimming, 8.30am
This part of the carnival is for serious and strong swimmers who would like to represent the school at the Diocesan Swimming Carnival in 2023. It will take place at 8.30am. Students will need to be dropped off at the pool for this part of the carnival. A key requirement to enter this carnival is that the swimmers are current squad swimmers and have received formal and ongoing swimming lessons. All swimmers must be able to swim 50m unaided. If you wish to enter your child in the competitive carnival you must fill out the following form by Monday 21 November. Competitive Swimming Carnival entry form
PART 2: Non-Competitive Swimming Carnival
This will take place at the conclusion of the competitive carnival. These students will arrive at school as normal, and will travel to and from Bomaderry pool for the carnival. All students who are competent swimmers will compete in this carnival. There will be no formal races and no ribbons presented. Students will be given the opportunity to swim against their friends across the width of the pool in freestyle, breaststroke and if time permits relays. All children are to complete the following form for the Non-Competitive Carnival by Monday 21 November. Non-Competitive Swimming Carnival Form
Diocesan Team Trials
The following students have recently trialled for Diocesan representative sports:
- Georgia Hayburn and Iris Zarrella (Year 5) and Grace Seller and Harley Hackett (Year 4) trialled for the Diocesan Basketball team.
- Lucas Duncan (Year 4) trialled for the Wollongong Tennis team.
Although they were impressive throughout with their skills, drills and games, they were up against students with exceptional abilities and narrowly missed out on selection.
- Cooper Green (Year 5) trialled for the Wollongong Diocesan Cricket team. Congratulations to Cooper who was one of 9 students selected to represent Wollongong as part of the MacKillop Cricket Trials to be held in Wagga across Wednesday 30 November and Thursday 1 December 2022. We wish Cooper all the best with these trials.

You Provide / They Decide Did you know? It takes over 14 times of trying foods in different ways to decide if you like a food item. It's important to continue providing children with foods from the five food groups (grains, proteins, dairy, fruit and vegetables) to expose them to a variety of nutritious foods.
